Dating In Cyberspace: Safety Tips To Shopping For Love Online

Submitted by: Leslie Gerard

These days, people are shopping for a lot more than apparel online. If you re looking for love, the internet may very well replace your favorite singles hot spot. It s important to note that dating in cyberspace requires a different approach, in many ways, than you may normally expect on the average dating scene.

When you first meet someone online, avoid the temptation to divulge too much information about yourself. This is especially true when it comes to your full name, address and/or telephone number. You wouldn t give this information to a perfect stranger, so why give it someone that you ve just met online? Chatting via IM isn t so much different than a telephone and if someone seems overly pushy when it comes to getting your personal information, there s probably a reason and it s not likely to be a good one.

Although many people have found success with it, meeting someone online is a gamble to say the least. There s no way to know for certain who you are talking to and, even with a photo, you won t be sure until you meet in person. By the way, meeting someone in person that you first became acquainted with online is best done in a public place and during daylight. Under no circumstances should you agree to meet someone in any other conditions because, to put it simply, you don t know anything about them.

When the time does come that you wish to meet your online love interest, make sure that you have a working cell phone with the numbers of family and friends programmed in for easy retrieval. Most likely, you would have your phone with you anyway, but it s just a wise precaution to take the extra time and make sure that it s with you during the meeting. It s also a good idea to have a close friend to trail behind you and casually be in your sight. If everything goes well, you can work out a signal with your friend to let him/her know that you are comfortable.

When you meet someone new, whether it be from a personal ad or the internet, a new set of rules apply that may otherwise seem unnecessary in the traditional dating sense. When you meet someone in class or at a gathering, you know who they are and what they look like. In most cases, you also know something about them. But when you are meeting someone that you have never seen and don t know anything about, it s wise to remain skeptical until you have reason to believe otherwise. In any dating scenario, it always pays to be smart.
